1869 British MP John Stuart Mill was the first person in Parliament to call for women's right to vote.

On 19 September 1893 New Zealand became the first country ever to give women the right to vote.

In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen.

Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) initiated the though of an International Women's Day.

She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day i.e., a Women's Day.

The first International Women's Day was launched the following year by Clara Zetkin on 19 March and not 8 March.

Marketing strategy adopted for the first International Women's Day 1911 demonstration was word of mouth and press.

Meetings were organized everywhere from small towns to villages halls. The places were so full that male workers were asked to make place for the women.

Men stayed at home with their children for a change while the wives went to meetings.

Does he deserve it?

Of the few glimpses i've managed to sneak the show looks pretty much scripted vis-a-vis, last season. Gaudy sets, elaborate drapery, changing sherwanis and fifteen eligible brides.

Whether the dames are dying to grab Mr. Rahul's attention or the camera, that's a mystery.

The host remains the same—Ram Kapoor. It's official that he's not been doing too much work on television, which is why he grabbed the opportunity to host the fiasco second time.

If only he had visited the gym we could have see him and Rahul together in one frame. No intentions to critique the show but the concept is lame anyways.

Did Rakhi marry?

Rahul's camaraderie includes once-heard-of celebrities like Sambhavana Seth. She's playing the sister he never had. The real sis must be quite pissed.

NDTV claims the brides have been hand-picked from 10,000 odd entries. Believe it if you like, I'm not. The prospective brides have been instructed to act sexy, whacky, witty, and blah...blah. Without instructions the show wouldn't run for 2 days let alone weeks.

Watch it, bear it or grin it...Rahul has decided to take the plunge—whether he takes home a bride or not.

Take-1 Meet the Mumbaikar!

You don't just add a suffix "kar" and become a Mumbaikar! You don't even need a piece of paper called domicile to make you feel like one. In reality, there's a lot more to it.
The epicenter of all dreams and aspirations, Mumbai has always been the final destination of many and while some came to visit others fell in love and stayed. Obviously, being born in the city has its advantages but that's all changed now.

So what's a typical Mumbaikar like?

Firstly let's split the populace as the eye views and mind gauges.

Type 1
Potential immigrants / migrants trying to fit in at work, colleges, business and more.

Type 2
Enjoy burning buses, state property and beating up innocent people.

Type 3
Mostly seen at railway station hanging upside down.

Type 4
Self proclaimed or wannabe always on the prowl.

Type 5
The working class from rickshawalla to dabbawalla

Above cases are just some of the real life examples hand-picked to understand the insights of a Mumbaikar. I think (my perception), by far type 3 are heroes. Not only do they travel by the city's lifeline they also reduce pollution and traffic on road.

Type 2 is the notorious one and seeks for nothing but mere sadistic pleasures. My sympathies goes out for Type 1, after all it's not an easy task to fit in amid the existing. Hence, type 1 either succeed or end up as victims.

Type 4, predominantly exist everywhere. Can't differentiate between India Gate and Gateway of India but claim to be the penultimate Mumbaikars. You'll find the menace-makers at all major festivals & events (like Ganpati, KalaGhoda, Marathon) committing debauchery, nuisance and trouble.

Then again, there's a certain section of people dwelling who work to keep the city moving. Type 5 encompasses those who contribute towards the pace of Mumbai. It doesn't matter how far you work, transportation will take you and home-made food will reach you.

What does the Mumbaikar speak?

Though Marathi is the accepted form of language, its Marathi with twist (a little bit of English and Hindi) that makes it special.

What does the Mumbaikar eat?

I know most would yell vada-pav, misal-pav... blah... blah... but here's the truth. From regional to international, Mumbai serves almost anything and everything the palate desires.

What makes the Mumbaikar passionate?

Passion resides in every Mumbaikar's vein. Whether its cricket or solidarity towards martyrs. There's no denying that in hours of need, Mumbaikars exhibit immense courage and support.

Are Mumbaikars taken for granted?

Only a true blue Mumbaikar can answer that.

Who's faking it?

Many. Yes, its true. Some do it to seek attention others feel empowered.

Copenhagen issue is on everybody's mind!!

I read your post about the Copenhagen conference. Personally, I do not
expect much change to come from it. There may be some resolutions passed,
but by and large, things will continue as they have before.

I'm emailing you, though, because I had a video I wanted to share and

Unfortunately, while I share your hope that the meeting will be more about
the climate than politics, the reality is that politics is their job and
they want to keep their job. Politics are impossible to escape.

I feel India may be leading the world by example, though, by focusing on
smart, high-tech jobs. Not only are the jobs profitable and increasingly
important, but they generate very little pollution.

China, as you point out, is much worse on the environment, and a major
part of their country's economy is in manufacturing. Manufacturing is
important, but only through research can we find cleaner ways to go about
it.

India tops Test Cricket

It took 77 years of hard work for India to become number one.

Yes, it's time to celebrate, cheer and enjoy. I'm sure, almost everyone jumped out of their couches when India crushed Sri Lanka to become the number one team in Test matches. The victory was historical for the country as it brought along, after 77 years, the numero uno status.

India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 24 runs on the fifth and final day of the third cricket Test to win the three-match series (2-0). Sri Lanka has slipped from second place to fourth with 115 points, one behind Australia.

The stats displayed on the board were a proof of exemplary team work and determination to win, Sehwag 293, Dhoni 100*, Dravid 74, Laxman 62 and Tendulkar 52. This is also India's 101st Test win, since 1932, they have played 432 Test matches and also lost 132 games.

The series would also be best remembered for the blazing 293-runs that Virender Sehwag scored. However, he missed out on becoming the first batsman in the game’s history to score three triple tons.

The team hugged each other, as proud coach Gary Kirsten greeted them to the pavilion. The teams will now gear up for two Twenty-Twenty matches in Nagpur and Mohali followed by a five-match One-day series which begins at Rajkot from December 15.

Dhoni and his men have made the country proud but the real test is in retaining the position.

Copenhagen summit to save the climate changes...

High-profile negotiations and strategies on 'climate change' is the topic of discussion at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, scheduled from December 7 to December 18, 2009. The reason for concern is the rapid melting of the Himalayan glaciers, high coal emissions and rise in sea levels due to the overuse of groundwater.

Climate change issue is in fact, more important than global recession or economic downturns, unfortunately the topic got overshadowed. Copenhagen summit is to revive the same, with serious and definite measures.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh, is scheduled to attend Copenhagen summit on December 18, to put forward climate change issues critical to India. India stands number four in the world when it comes to greenhouse gas emission.

India has announced that it would try to minimize the growth of its carbon dioxide emissions over the next decade. While India's intensity of CO2 use is among the lowest in the world, China's is among the highest.

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, recently announced in the Parliament that India would take efforts to reduce its 'carbon intensity' (the amount of carbon dioxide emitted for each unit of gross domestic product) by 25 per cent from 2005 to 2020.

Jairam Ramesh however made it clear that the effort would be voluntary and free from legal binding. While environmentalists welcomed the idea, opposition politicians created a furore. Let's hope the Copenhagen summit concentrates on the larger issue of 'climate change' rather than political clashes.

Yes, its true. Rain water if managed/harvested properly can create water in abundance. In short, save water to create water.

Rain water harvesting (RWH) can create water supply for everyone and all it requires is proper water management. Its a technique that captures rainwater, channelizes the flow into pits or tanks or diverts them into underground reservoirs.

This recycled water obtained is pure and filtered, therefore it can be used for consumption. BMC is also incorporating this technique for utilizing rain water in Mumbai at Byculla zoo and TB Hospital, Sewri. Pipes and trenches would be used to carry the rain water

In fact, a law has been passed from October 1, regarding rain water harvesting and it states that, builders developing plots with an area above 1,000 sq metres to make provisions for rainwater harvesting. The technique will be extremely helpful considering the rainfall Mumbai records. BMC supplies approx 3,000 million litres of water in a day to the city. Even if some amount of water can be recycled, it would prove beneficial.

The method is cost-effective and the quality of water obtained from rain water harvesting is superior than tanker. Mumbaikars are yet to understand & realize the true potential of rain water harvesting.

The fame seeking couple joined a line of dinner guests from an entrance made for the pedestrians. It seems that the security service weren't in a mood to check everyone.

Here's the irony, the President Barack Obama and other high-level officials were conducting a review cum dinner on the security breach issue on Tuesday in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Tareq and Michaele Salahi, the daredevils weren't on the official guest list, but crashed the White House party and posed with who's who that night. The pictures have been doing several rounds on the internet and facebook.

Moral of the story: If the Salahis could, anyone can. Is the President listening?

Tech-savvy Terrorists and their toys!

The new breed of terrorists are in complete sync with the latest gizmos and gadgets. Their weapon is technology and they sure know how to use it!

Flashback 26/11/2008, the terrorists who tormented Mumbai for 72 hours, were trained to handle technology with perfection and ease. Their clothing was simple and like any other commoner. How does one differentiate between a layman and a terrorists who parades in a fake Armani jacket, cargo-pants and trainers?

The au courant terrorists were also in no mood to compromise when it came to health, i.e. a bag full of nutritious dry fruits (almonds).
What's more, to stay ahead of the police and the military the terrorists were equipped with the latest BlackBerry mobile phones with mobile internet connections.

With zero fear the squad entered our territory in small dinghies on Wednesday evening and split into groups. One group headed to the CST station and open fired bullets on innocent passengers till they succumbed to death. Just two terrorists were enough to terrorize the CST station, simply because they were armed with AK-47 and our protectors had sticks!

The CCTV images showed uber confidence no conscience. Indiscriminately shooting, from CST to Cama Hospital was only possible because the terrorists came with a mission to "kill as many as possible". Their arms and ammunitions, did the rest!

Such was their mission and preparation that Mumbai's Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), Hemant Karkare, who was shot dead instantly with two other senior officers. One wishes we were half as prepared as the terrorists.

Next destination, Cafe Leopold, where another group fired three grenades and used automated weapons. Then started a saga at the Taj Hotel, Oberoi/Trident and the Nariman House, which looked like a scene from a war movie.

It's like the terrorists knew exactly where and when to attack. They were familiar with the hotel layouts and everything that went on inside the Taj Hotel was almost unbelievable. A legacy that's stood for 100 yrs was being torn apart by the seconds. The gunmen were totally remorseless and trained to do their job at any cost, after all its not easy for anyone to hold an A-K series!!

This is what the rucksack contained -- Mauritian national's identity card, Chinese-made grenades, 400 spare rounds of ammunition, seven ammunition magazines, seven credit cards (all from different banks), dry rations (almonds/dates) and thousands of dollars in cash.

To keep abreast with every bit of information, orders and news feeds -- mobile phones and internet technology were used. The trained terrorists were so determined that they shot anyone who came in the way! The topography of the Hotel was so clear to the terrorist that they were spraying in absolute darkness too.

While most of the guests hid themselves in their respective rooms, others weren't so lucky. In fact, most of the victims were those who were celebrating anniversaries, dinners and family get-togethers. The battle at Nariman House was as brutal as the above. Though the terrorists were less in number, it turned out to be their strength. The NSG commandos came in (though a little late) and along came relief!

No one knew what was in store for Mumbai on 26/11/2008, except the terrorists. If only, we were half as prepared as them.

Sachin Tendulkar and the entire nation has been celebrating his 20 years in international cricket but Bal Thackeray has better things to do, i.e. spread his Raj (Yes, pun intended).

On being asked about the current marathi-hindi rift, Sachin stated "I am extremely proud of being a Maharashtrian, but Mumbai is a part of India and I play for India". Shiv Sena's chief has slammed the remark.

Now, this statement has hurt Mr Thackeray real bad and therefore he retorted "Stay sway from politics and concentrate on cricket."

With the help of some social workers, she approached the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Subsequently, her stepfather was put behind bars.

What's Cyclone Phyan (pronounced YAN)

A cyclonic storm, which is being called Cyclone Phyan by the Met office, has developed over the Arabian Sea off the north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts. The cyclone will not hit Mumbai directly as was thought earlier, but will cause heavy rains in the city as well as inland Maharashtra.

Thane, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigarh and Greater Mumbai are the areas in Mumbai that may feel the impact of the passing cyclone.

The wind speed of Cyclone Phyan is said to be approx 70 to 80 km per hour, which is much less than Cyclone Aila that had hit the Bengal coast in May this year.

The cyclone, which started as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal off the Kerala coast on Monday, moved northwards towards Konkan coast and intensified into a cyclonic storm on Tuesday.

The system is also expected to cause widespread rainfall across Goa, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh

The cyclone is at danger level 6; Met department has advised people in low-lying areas to vacate. Rough weather is expected in Mumbai in the afternoon. Ports will have to reduce activities and take safety measure

Surat, in Gujarat, is in the eye of the storm, but Mumbaikars are already feeling the impact of the cyclone. It's constantly raining in Mumbai. The city has received a total rainfall of 39mm till 5.30 am on Wednesday. Strong winds may commence anytime soon along the coast of north Maharashtra. This is for the first time Mumbai is facing untimely rains of this intensity.

Mrs India gets a reality show of its own!

The tube nowadays is all about reality shows, which is why Mrs India 2010 going that way was inevitable.

This time the "mother of all contests" is contest is going to be an open war. A reality show comes with all kinds of perks like gossips, bitching, bonding and most importantly eliminations.

Yes, as the days pass by, women are going to get less in number and more in power! I had the opportunity to spend a day with the new recruits (courtesy: winner-runner up & Mrs Photogenic, last year) and boy was it fun.

With only one thing in mind (The Crown), the pretty contestants have come down from places like USA, Dubai, Ahemdabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Chattisgarh and Mumbai.

It seems like Mrs Maureen Wadia has a huge task on her hand and knowing her she'll pull it off with great ease. I've heard that the tasks are pretty tough and requires both physical and mental grit. Can't reveal much as that's a big surprise.

Rain Gods are in mood to pour!

It seems that Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan starrer 'Tum Mile' is getting all the mileage it needs.

Weather officials on Wednesday reported that a depression in the Arabian Sea has intensified into a cyclonic storm, with heavy rains and gusting winds forecast for Mumbai and other parts of India's west coast,

Furthermore, Cyclone Phyan lies about 600 km south-southwest off Mumbai, is now moving in a north-northeasterly direction. Heavy rains are expected. Fishermen have been advised not to advance towards the sea and people living in low-lying areas have been asked to move.

In fact at Mumbai's airport, rain and windy conditions have already caused 40 minutes of delays. The rains could also hamper crushing of sugarcane in Maharashtra state, the country's top producer of sugar.

Also, the final one-day international cricket match between Australia and India, scheduled to begin later on Wednesday in Mumbai, may be cancelled, TV news channels have reported.

MLAs get suspended for 4 years, for misconduct and violence.

Ram Kadam, Shishir Shinde, Ramesh Vanzale and Vasant Gite are the four MLAs, Maharashtra Assembly has suspended for assaulting Abu Azmi.

Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi was taking his oath in Hindi at the assembly which agitated the MLAs. Within a matter of seconds Azmi was cornered by the pro-marathi MNS men.

Thackeray's men grabbed the microphone and slapped Abu Azmi for the same. In fact the spokesperson of MNS, Shirish Parkar retorted "Hindi is not a national language".

In the new Assembly, Thackeray has 13 MLAs and chief minister, Ashok Chavan, has demanded action against all.

Though she was a little nervous about the catwalk, once on ramp she felt like a queen. The outfit was a differently styled, multi-coloured and floral salwar-kameez. Her hair was tied in a bun and ornamented with two real pink lilies.

The actress accepted that it was a treat to be a showstopper and though she's a full time politician now, a little bit of glamour is fine.
Besides Jaya Prada, Ashima-Leena also roped in former cricketer Kapil Dev and chess champion Tania Sachdev to grace the runway.

Kapil Dev looked dashing in an olive green kurta-pyjama with leaf motifs and the young Tania looked chic in a balloon dress. The designers wanted to be different and spread the message of peace through fashion. Well, the thought does deserves an applaud.

The numbers are out.

Despite holiday, Mumbai did rather bad. Only 48% people steeped out fo thier homes to vote. The others, enjoyed the time-off.
Even a naxal dominated Gadchiroli, churned out 55%. Various reasons for poor turnout in Mumbai were uninspiring politicians, lack of connection between the people and the politicians , disinterested people and lack of responsibility.

Saving grace was the celeb quotient. Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar & wife, Gauri Khan sans Shahrukh, Mr. & Mrs.Sanjay Dutt, Ambanis, Salman Khan, Amir Khan & wife, Anupan Kher were amongst many others to get inked.

Infact, Anupam Kher defined an idiot as a person who doesn't vote. The reason for decline in votes is beyond anyone's understanding. I'm guessing the people have lost faith in the so-called-system.

Virtual farming has become the craze of the I-love-facebook-to-death. From planting to sowing to harvesting, everyone's doing it. Moreover, its got nothing to do with the gender. The game is cleverly built thereby satisfying both the sexes. While building & decorating may seem girly, moving levels up & earning rewards make you feel tough and powerful.

Facebook had indeed gotten into the minds of its users. Even those who weren't into web-games or play stations, have been hooked by this virtual hullabaloo.
In fact, its become a family fun-fare. Yes, move over monopoly and twister, you've been replaced. Farmville, is so addictive, that its players plan their weekends and weekdays around it. The result, a beautifully laid out farm with chickens, cows, strawberries, trees, hot air balloons and more...

Who's playing it? Everyone. The reasons maybe different, like 'my friends are on it', 'my empire', 'the art of making profits', or simply because its cool.

How it starts? Initial sessions are really short and you'll be like what that's it. Once you get into the mode, you''ll be planting/sowing/reaping/harvesting for hours.

What's next? The game will take over your senses. Growing fruits and planting trees, will be your top priority.

Getting social. Yes, sending cows, sheds, chickens and all of that will make your friends happy and vice-versa. So, you see the strategy is crackerjack!

What I think of it? Frankly, I don't detest it, but its not my idea of having fun. Anything, that turns into an addiction, is definitely not good. I'm sure all the smart people reading this, already know that.

Is Rs 350 Cr for a statue justified?

When we pay our taxes, we think progress, development, better infrastructure, improved roads and so many more things that our city actually needs and deserves. What do we get in return, false hopes and false promises.

I'm pretty sure, if Shivaji Maharaj was alive, he would have lost his cool over our so called politicians. Why can't our hungry-for-votes, politicians felicitate Chhatrapati Shivaji, by building a school or a hospital or simply granting scholarships in his name? This way both, Shivaji Maharaj and the needy will be happy.

Apparently, Rs 350 crore, can educate two lakh children but our politicians seem to prefer illiteracy over anything and everything. After all, educated voters are politicians biggest worry. And what's with the statue being 4 ft taller than Statue of liberty! Classic case of 'mine bigger than yours'.

I'm not against Shivaji Maharaj but a statue already exists. Even the airport and railway station have been renamed to honor the warrior. What will this statue do that the others haven't.

Wake up people! Mumbai needs progress, not another memorial.

Doordarshan turns 50!

Remember, Lajoji from 'Buniyaad', Chutki and Majhli from 'Humlog', a dapper Roshan Seth hosting 'Bahrat ek khoj' and many more shows, that have not just entertained the country in the past, but have lived to be told.

On September 15, 1959, DD started broadcasting in India when UNESCO gave the Indian government USD 20,000 and 180 Philips TV sets. It's been 50 years and plenty has changed, but the essence remains pretty much the same. While surfing channels, i still manage to catch a glimpse of 'Chitrahaar' (a collection of timeless songs).

My favorite show was the sci-fi inspired 'Sigma'. It was futuristic, snazzy and cool. 'Surabhi', was another show i loved to watch. Entertaining, informative and interactive, Surabhi was co-hosted by Renuka Shahane and Siddharth Kak. In fact, it was the first to introduce the question-answer contest format. At this point, I must also mention the irritating 'Rookavat ke liye khed hai', as it left us with no choice.

Things have changed now, channels have increased and, so have the shows. And even though entertainment has been redefined, Doordarshan will always be the first.

Malgudi days, Mirza Ghalib, Yeh jo hai zindagi, Trishna, Intezaarj, Mujarim Hazir, Yugantaar, Katha saagar, Kab tak pukaroon, Shrikaant, Byomkesh Bakshi, Karamchand, Neem ka ped, Apna Apna Aasmaan...

The list is extensive, however if you do have a favorite show or a childhood memory like mine, then just add it to the list.

55th National award, running late

This year, has been the best for Tamil Cinema. Three most important awards at the 55th National Award for the year 2007 have gone down south. The award for the Best Actor went to Prakash Raj, for his performance in Kanchivaram.

The Best Picture award was also bagged by Kanchivaram, directed by Priyadarshan. Rajnikanth starrer Sivaji, directed by Shankar walked away with the Best Special Effects award. Malayalam film director Adoor Gopalakrishnan got the Best Director award for Naalu Pennungal. Best Female Actor was awarded to Umashree (Gulabi Talkies) Kannada. Sharad Goyekar (Tingya, Marathi film) won the award for the Best Child Actor.

Even the students of Film and Television Institute walked away with seven awards in different categories. Siddharth Sinha's 21 minute long film, was earlier awarded with the Silver Bear at Berlin Film Festival but, it was the National award that left him overwhelmed.

Gandhi My Father, took away awards for Best Screenplay, Best supporting Actor, Darshan Zariwala and the Special Jury Award. Chak De, was awarded for Wholesome entertainment and Taare Zameen Par for Family welfare. Best Playback Male was awarded to Shankar Mahadevan for the soulful song 'Meri Maa' and from Taare Zameen Par. Prasoon Joshi bagged the Best Lyrics award for the same.

Shefali Shah won the Best Supporting Actress award for English film 'The Last Lear' and Shreya Ghosal won the Best Female Playback Singer award for the film 'Jab We Met'. The Yeh Ishq Hai song from the same film won an award for Best Choreography. Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om won an award for Best Art Direction.

However, what's weird is that all of the above releases were in 2007. Are we running late in National Awards too.

Delhi's Ambedkar Stadium was the place to be last night. After 90 minutes of hard work, the final match between India and Syria (2009 ONGC Nehru Cup) turned out to be one glorious victory. The excitement began at the 114th minute (phew) with Renedy Singh's freekick. India was minutes away from winning when Ali Diab pushed the game into penalties with a brilliant header. Like all finals in the past, this time too, Indian Football team had the entire our country nail biting and praying.

The stage was set for penalty shootout and India raced ahead with 3-1. 22-year old goalkeeper Subrata Pal, made his job look so damn easy. Every time that he came to his mark he smiled viciously and wished the opponent good luck. Not only did his strategy work, it also fetched him man of the match.
Though Syria did manage to create tension when the scores leveled at 4-4, but Subrata's judgement did it all. Kudos to Bachung Bhutia and his team.

Bhuvan, India's answer to Google Earth

The desi geoportal allows the users to explore a virtual world for absolutely no cost. Launched barely seven days ago (August 13, 2009), stats have revealed that the response so far has been phenomenal. 156,000 downloads and still counting, Bhuvan has managed to grab several eyeballs.

Under the direction of ISRO Chairman Madhavan Nair and Jayaraman, a team of 20 members from NRSA (a part of ISRO)dedicated themselves into the designing and developing aspect of Bhuvan. In fact, Mr Jayaram has stated that Bhuvan for them, was a visualization tool and first step towards showcasing India's geo-capabilities.

Bhuvan allows the users to view satellite imagery, output of flood studies for certain areas, value added information like the National Agricultural Drought Monitoring System (NADAMS), thematic information about soils, wastelands, water resources, watershed, base layers, transport layers, water bodies, census information and lots more.

The basic version of Bhuvan is free and all you have to do is register, log-in and download the Bhuvan plug-in. The main window displays a globe on which you can start navigating with either the mouse or the HUD option (Heads-Up Display) placed on the right top corner. Zoom in using double right click and zoom out using double left click.

With popular web giants like Google Earth and Microsoft's Virtual Earth, Bhuvan has tremendous pressure riding on it. Also, the constant comparisons could get pretty intimidating. However, Jayaram has backed Bhuvan by stating that comparisons have been media hyped.

Yes, that's the amount of insurance Mumbai's famous Ganesh idol gets

A whooping figure of Rs.26.5 million has been quoted as the total amount of money spent on the Ganesh pandal. And in case of any mishap this amount is fully covered.

President of the Lalbaugcha Raja committee, Sunil Joshi stated that the insurance had become a concern as the security of the devotees was essential. Also, everybody makes it a point to take blessings from the popular idol whether it's top industrilaists, bollywood celebrities or politicians. He further elaborated that the committee had taken out two separate policies from Bajaj Alliance for which they have paid a premium of Rs.140,000.

Lalbaugcha Raja attracts hordes of devotees every year however, this is the first time the organizers have decided to insure the deity. The first component of insurance policy of Rs.10 million has been taken for approx. 1.5 million devotees, who are likely to visit the 10-day long festival.

The second component of Rs.10.1 million will provide cover to the huge crowds of devotees in case of any kind of accident. The 12-ft-tall statue arrived on Sunday at its traditional venue (Parel).
Apart from the insurance, Lalbaugcha Raja and the devotees are being provided with round-the-clock security by over 2,000 volunteers throughout the 10-day festival.

Well it seems like good times may just be around the corner. Yes, amidst all the swine flu hoopla that has caused sadness worldwide, the recent upswing of economy is a big reason to smile.

Stats reveal that almost six of world's top 10 economies have managed to scoop out of recession. Also India and China are already on the path of recovery and growth. Countries like France, Germany and Japan are also moving upwards steadily. However, larger economies like UK and US may take some more time, though they feel that the worst is over.

In fact, the UN recently stated that the current economic stability is due to the progressive Asian countries. Well, this just goes to show that we as a nation are farsighted and visionary.
This year, we turn 62 years young and on the eve of independence day let us feel proud that we are making a huge difference.

Time and again, the patience of this city has been tested by both nature and mankind. At times it bled, at times it cried, but never gave up. Mumbai is famous for sheltering many kinds and instead of giving it the respect it deserves, all it ever gets is an increasing death toll.

The only question that bothers every citizen is that, why am I expected to be resilient every time that I encounter fear ? I feel the pain, Mumbai too feels the pain. People dying in numerous train blasts, while their families wait in dire anticipation. Homes wrecked, families gone, all due to unforeseen and unpredictable rains. Few armed men walk straight into the city with guns and dry-fruits and terrorize thousands of minds with immense fear. All these events have scarred Mumbai deeply.

Despite all of this, mumbaikars have managed to bid farewell to the dark days and move on. And just when the people were in the midst of regaining themselves, the city has been infused with yet another terror. Yes, the swine flu. Spreading at the speed of light and instilling fear amongst all, it has forced the citizens to step back.

Like always, this time too, let us exhibit solidarity and fight this battle as one.

Spread awareness not swine flu.

Ps: I am shocked at people trying to gain benefit out of the situation. Selling masks like black tickets just goes to show ignorance and irresponsibility.

Yes, the mumbai rains are here. A tad bit late but here. While most of us are fretting over knee-deep water clogging let us pause for a while and think about those who suffer from the lack of it. My dear farmer friends, the rain Gods have answered your prayers, you may continue to sow your seeds.

Don't let the monsoon bother you. Instead, set yourself free. Take a walk in the rain, share a hot vada pav with your best friend, relish the chai with steaming hot pakodas, rent a movie or simply stand near the window sill and smell the wet mud.

Rains may bring some unforeseen problems but they are also responsible for creating an atmosphere that's perfect for every Indian movie.

So, cheer up and make sure this time you get wet because you want to.

Okay i confess, I'm no expert on cars. Infact i don't care about the bhp or mileage or whatever is stuffed beneath the lovely exteriors, but there is one thing i can state and that is " this country does not need a NaNo!! "

What is does need is roads, flyovers and infrastructure for the existing vehicles. And what about the ever increasing traffic on the always 'under-construction' roads, the unruly traffic signals and several appearing and disappearing signs that are most of the times hidden under billboards.

BTW where will the little wonder park itself? Well I'm guessing the hall, kitchen or bathroom. Once again the people have been fooled by the rich and mighty..
Whats next a motorised tricycle that runs on water...

Well for all those who are waiting for their Christmas gift from TATA can kiss goodbye to everything else. After all with so many Nano cars on the road no one will ever reach home..

While many people touch our lives at different crossings, some stay along with us at all times. Maybe not physically but mentally, emotionally and sub- consciously.

As for me, I am my father's daughter and my mother's inspiration. In order, to keep the sibling rivalry alive, my brothers have played their individual roles fantastically. Born actors i must say.

Transition thy name is life. Everyday is new and different, at times challenging at times rough. I have moved on from one family to another, however this one is mine. I will have to nourish it from the very root.

Yet i am not alone, my binding force is my partner, both in time and crime. Together we intend to create a life that is inspired from our pasts. The journey may have its complexities but what i have is none the less.

Therefore, the time is right and appropriate to say thank you all for being with me. I will always need you................

The year that was.......

Yes, it is that time of the year when the little black dress comes out of the closet and the bar gets stacked..another year gone by and another year to come. But sadly nothing changes other than the planetary alignments and the calendar.

Like every year, this year too evoked anger, love, frustration and all those moments that can easily be depicted in the three hour bollywood cinema(PS. the directors have begun).

But does that change anything...NO. People still continue to kill, hold ransom, rape, convert into devotees in the most obnoxious methods and cherish the wicked idea of polygamy.

This year witnessed some heinous crimes like the chopping of body into 300 pieces, friends strangling an 18 year old in skoda, several compartments of local train blowing up at timed intervals, in the name of honour killing, blasts at every city that the country prides and the face-to-face terror attack that shook the world.

That's not all, there where many more crimes that bled the country. And each one of them so filthy that it makes you wonder whether was it this that God intended. Sadly nothing can be done cause the damage is severe and the repair is unknown.

As, the clock ticks this time i shall only pray that next year there is love, peace, better politics, good health and a booming economy.And i hope that everyone does the same cause one prayer may take time but with millions of prayers even God does not stand a chance.............Amen to that.

I wish everyone who has loved, lost and seeking for new a happy new year!!!!!!!!

If you thought 62 hours of gruesome torture has finally come to an end then let me be the first to tell you that this is just the beginning.One look at the Taj and you would witness the sight of thousands of people, who have come down to not only exhibit their solidarity but also rage and animosity towards the so called government.

The comments are coming straight from the heart.Everyone is searching for the same answer, that is when will the fear of terror come to an end.The gateway of India is flocked with people who have taken out time from their busy schedule to question the authorities and ask them that "are we safe ".

All politicians as of now are suffering from a severe foot-in-mouth syndrome and are making silly remarks left ,right and centre.The hearts are broken and so is the faith of every Indian.Despite all, a certain Mr. Patil has the gall to say that 'bade bade shehar mein aise baatein hoti rehti hain'.Please tell the man that he is not auditioning for a movie but answering to his countrymen.

Naqui, a spokeperson from BJP too blabbered that ' powders and lipsticks are not enough to deal with such situations'. A man in the crowd retorted to the remarks saying that 'what have the politicians done after donning the khakhi kurta'. Another voice commented that voting should be made applicable for people who are educated and have served for a of minimum ten years.Also the politicians should retire at 60.After all we do not want leaders who need to be wheeled into the parliament house.

Analyse the contrast of statements given by a common man and that of a politician.The only good that this incident has done is, it has shown the strength and unity of the citizens not only in Bombay but all over the country.The heinous incident has not only charred the structure and building but also the soul of every Indian.

When i heard the news, the oh-so-breaking news with comments splashed that 'all is over' and 'we have done it' ,my memory jogged back to the July 08. A series of blasts that ripped the Bombay city apart and we could do nothing about it.Come to think about it how many of us know what's happened to the terrorists who were convicted for the same.

And today after only four months later when the town was all set to welcome the new year it is shocking that we have to deal with the loss of brave men,innocent hostages and the common man...

My only question to the authorities is that, why was there no security provided to the elite class hotels after a JW Marriot incident which took place 2 months back in Pakistan? Well you do not need to be a rocket scientist to understand it is all a game of 'tit for tat'.I am not saying its Pakistan the country that needs to be blamed.But time and again the most trained militants have always been a product of not the IIM Bangalore but Pakistan.

No, we haven't won any war yet and certainly not the battle.This is only because you don't know who you are fighting with but at least the fact that who you are fighting for is loud and clear.Why is that a country needs to witness a' Jaalian Wala Bagh' massacre for people to realise that they need independence and fight their lives for it? Why let it occur in the first place?

Enough is enough, neither we have the patience nor the resilience left in us to face any more suffering. I can understand that our government is too small to tackle the nature and hence unable to save millions who succumb to it.But is our government to small and beneath the terrorist who fearlessly terrorise the world with few guns, grenades, dryfruits and intense fear in their eyes.

And my final question is to the politicians who gather only and only votes from these catastrophies is, were you sleeping in your crib while the nation was suffering?

Whenever you read , hear or talk about LIVE - IN, the only thing the mind wants to know is convenient sex. And i am not advocating anything while i say this but why do people forget that even if they are not bound by legal matrimony they still share every emotion of it.

Most of us think that these people run away from the daily boredom of marriage but at times Ive felt, they realise that they love each other so much that if their relation ever turns sour they would not be able to deal with it. This brings out one strong point that somewhere these people at weaker at heart, weaker at mind and weakest at commitment.

I feel and i strongly do, when one is in love make sure all your senses are working extra-time. If you truly want to live with the relationship forever (god bless them) then work hard towards it . Know-all, do not interrogate or divulge every unwanted detail but whatever will cling on or be a part of you please do not hide it. A lie begets lies,and only God knows how many more sins you end up committing while doing so.

What my headlines mean when i say do live-in, is to try and see yourself with the person as a companion, see your future and not just the evening or probably a hopeful night. Remember that is the edge a love marriage has over an arranged marriage. KIf u're thinking this is strictly pertaining to women, you are so wrong.Everybody wants to be thin now days , its like the 'IN' thing right now.There was i time when we wished for true love when we saw a shooting star but now its about being thin.

The word zero always thought to be inconsequential has suddenly shot to fame overnight,thanks to actors starving to death for bare to dare roles or models wanting to show some garments on their reed thin frame.Well somebody quoted that in this era everyone can have his/her 15 seconds of fame, looks like its already happening.

Then again how many of us actually understand that its purely science of our body that determines the weight loss.Everyone has a different body constitution and so is their eating habits.Unfortunately you cannot eat like the Khali and look like Kate Moss.

I feel the next best thing to happen to mankind after the electricity is actually the 'GYMNASIUM'. More popularly known as the gyms,have now become the hot spots and have totally taken over the oh -so -popular discotheques.

From different families,cultures and lifestyles people come to this new age wonder to shed inhibitions,clothes and hopefully a few pounds.There are young girls wanting to look svelte like models,boys wanting to be the next Brad Pitt,uncles and aunties pretending to be these boys and girls .This is one place where the only bar is the balance bar.

Suddenly,everybody around is feeling the innate need to yell and scream their views and opinions about everything.

For a while i thought its a phase and it will die out,but who knew its a bug that's biting you so hard that before you realise you've started posting already...yeah I'm only human.

I know i have lots of stories to shout aloud and this is the perfect place to do so,finally a place to release the hormones.And as much as i tried to resist myself into this fad I'm very proud to say i succumbed to it.
